Hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day! My mom and I spent the day at the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco along with my fiancé and my dad. My whole family are huge Disney fans and love learning about the history of it all. Dumbo was Disney's fourth full length movie and I am sure everyone remembers what it was about. It is one of my favorite Disney movies (though it is impossible to choose just one) and was my favorite ride a Disneyland as a kid.

When trying to think of a theme for my inspiration board this week, I wanted to do something Disney though not the obvious Cinderella/princess wedding with a huge ballgown and tiara. Although beautiful, its been done. I began thinking of Disney's early movies and remembered the lovable baby elephant with the enormous ears that captured out hearts. Its a story about overcoming obstacles and believing in yourself and others. Great messages for the beginning of your life together and besides, isn't life just a big circus!

Spent the afternoon planting lavender and daisy seeds for my centerpieces for my own wedding. A much greener option than cut flowers and Brook and I can plant them in our garden after the wedding and be reminded of our wedding day when they bloom year after year! Now let's just cross our fingers that I don't kill them before the wedding. I have already over watered the daisies and had to try and soak up the excess with towels. I don't have the greenest thumb but luckily I haven't killed a plant yet.

Ok so I don't mean green as in the color though there is something quite fetching about the idea of a bride gliding down the aisle in a beautiful emerald green gown. Kind of makes me think of something Arwen of Lord of the Ring would wear. Did she ever even wear green?

This 1947 bride made her bridal party wear custom made dresses. Sounds glamourous, right? Think again. These custom made dresses were made of TURKEY FEATHERS! Each gown was valued at $18,000! (or $175,000 in today's dollars!)

So if any of your girls complain about their dress, tell them at least they aren't wearing turkey feather!

One of the top trends for 2010 is to break all trends. Who says you have to have a wedding "cake"? Now we have all seen wedding cupcakes by why not wedding pies? This is such a great idea for a casual backyard wedding or a warm holiday wedding. It really brings you back home and brings a reminder of family traditions and down home values.

Now... What about those of you who are fun loving, maybe just a little bit goofy? How about donuts? Yes I said donuts! Pile them into a tiered tower to take the shape of a "traditional" wedding cake or hand them out as to your guests as favors.

Or who says you have to choose just one? You can combine your love of all things sweet (including your fiancé) into one large dessert buffet! Have petit fours, candied apples, chocolate mousse, tarts, crème brûlée, chocolate fountain, or any other delicious favorites of you and your fiancé!

Eco-Fetti!

Be bright and cheery and still allow for a bright and cheery planet! Check out Eco-Confetti! There are a couple different versions of this. One just washes away with the next rain fall or a quick hose down and is completely biodegradable. Another is emplanted with wildflower seeds so when it is tossed it will then grow into beautiful wildflowers!

When providing anything for your guests to throw, be sure to check with your venue first, especially with the wildflower confetti.

Let Those Who Stand By You In Life, Stand By You Today

As you stand at the alter about to marry the person of your dreams, you want those who are most important to you, who have always stood by you, to stand by your side on your wedding day as well. Well what if you are a woman and your best friend is a MAN! What about your brother who you have always been close to? Well, I guess you could always pawn them off on your groom if you want. But why? He is your best friend. Your brother. Break with "tradition" and honor your friends by having them support YOU! Here's how...

What should he wear?
Now, most men won't wear a bridesmaid's dress! (If they will, well, great! Saves you the trouble of reading the rest!) Dress your guy pals in similar attire to any attendents on your partner's side. Signify who's side he is on by using different color ties, vests, etc. He also does have to carry a bouquet either. Pin on a boutonneire that mimics the girls' bouquets.

What should she wear?
Now the same deal goes for any grooms who want to have female attendants. If she wants to wear a tux or a pant suit, that's fine. If she perfers a dress, you can match her to the rest of the girls, though this may cause some confusion. Best may be to dress her in the same color as the guys' tuxedos or suits.

What do we call them?
Here are a few title options for you:
Bridesman/Groomswoman
Bride's Witness/Groom's Witness
Man of Honor/Best Woman/Best Lady
Honor Attendant
Friend of Honor
Bride's Attendant/Groom's Attendant *This is my favorite! It works for everyone!

Now, what do they do?
Just because you may have an attendant who is of the opposite sex of you, their duties are the same as the rest of your attendants. As far as Bridal Showers and Bachelorette/Bachelor Parties, this may depend on their comfort level. Perhaps a co-ed Bridal Shower?

Hope this all helps! If you have more questions, just ask! Just remember to mix it up and make sure your wedding reflects you and ALL your relationships! Don't be afraid to do things a little bit different. You aren't a cookie cutter couple so why have a cookie cutter wedding!

I got the photos from both Marianne and Jeff's wedding as well as Candyce & Justin's wedding that just happened this past Sunday. Was so excited! I had already seen Marianne and Jeff's photos but now I have my copies. Here is the link to my flickr page that has them all! They turned out great. Their wedding was so much fun and they partied all night! Thought we were going to have to kick everyone out at the end of the night!

Now, Candyce and Justin are such an awesome couple! Candyce has become a great friend and I am sure we will continue to hang out even now that the wedding is over. Their pictures are great and you can just see the love and happiness in their eyes. The dreamy look Candyce gets when she looks at Justin is adorable. Well the holidays are fast approaching! I can't believe this year is coming to an end so quickly. In some exciting news, I just completed my training with the ACPWC (Association of Certified Professional Wedding Consultants) and received my certificate in the mail the other day! I am so excited and can't wait to work toward my "Certified" title!

On Monday I start my wedding planner certification class through ACPWC! I can't wait! I got a late start enrolling so I have been swamped in homework preparing for the class. That is why I haven't been posting much lately. Well, I decide to take a short break from the piles of work and let everyone in on the news!

Put it on Ice - Inspiration Board #5

I found this great idea in The Best of Martha Stewart Living: Weddings . There was a beautiful four tiered wedding cake made of ice with chilled jumbo shrimp laying atop each layer like beautiful flowers. Well, how about I just show you the picture?

Isn't it so elegant?! Well, I was inspired. Although ice sculptures can be expensive, they don't have to be. This one is pretty simple to make as they are just blocks. If you have the freezer space, why not? Just get some cake pans in the size that you want fill them with water and freeze.

Now, a few tips as it isn't exactly as simple as making ice cubes.
1. Put the pans in the freezer before adding the water. Once they are filled they can be pretty heavy.
2. Allow them to freeze for at least two full days to make sure they are good and solid.
3. When you are ready, take them out of the freezer and allow them to melt slightly and they are easy to remove. Do NOT run hot water over them as that will cause them to crack.
4. Get creative! Add food coloring or glitter. Or use distilled water for very clear ice.

Now if you are doing tiers like this one, obviously, you can just stack them. Ice is slippery. Drill a couple holes near the center (make sure you measure so your tiers are straight) and insert dowels. Make sure they are strong enough as ice is much heavier than cake.

DIY - High Style Glamour!

I happened to stumble across this as I was looking for photos of what was in my head for my own wedding and these were nealry exactly it! They are so easy to make for a completely custom, one-of-a-kind look.

The vases are from Ikea and are 30" tall. You should be able to find something similar anywhere. Get creative with the shape too. As long as they are translucent so the light shines through and narrow at the top so you don't need 8 million feather, they'll work.

For these, they covered the vase with a peach colored girl's tights though you can use any color to match you decor. Then they wrapped the vase in tulle to give it texture.

They are lit with lights from Instalyte. There are orange, yellow and white lights used in these for a soft, peachy glow. They rigged a styrofoam light holder with tiny mirrors to reflect the light and attached this to some thread. On the morning of the wedding, the lights were turned on and lowered into the vases using the thread.

I would suggest attaching all the ostrich feathers to florist wire and sticking them into a piece for florist foam that will fit into the neck of the vase. This will make them more sturdy and you can sick them upward to make it look fuller.

Ostrich feathers are rather expensive but shop around. I found them on eBay at a great price. The people that did these got them through a place called Mother Plucker. You have to call to order them as online only sells boas and wings.

You can scatter faux crystals, tealights, or anything else around the base if you'd like. Gorgeous!

Big Dreams, Small Budget - Inspiration Board #4

Just because you have envisioned your big day as an large extravigant event, doesn't mean you need to take out a loan to pay for it all. There are many ways to save and still wow everyone, including yourself! Why start you life together with a ton of debt if you don't have to?

Hydrangra Centerpiece - Simple cut flowers make a beautiful centerpiece. Depending on what flowers you choose, it can work from anything from and casual garden party to and elegant affair. Choosing large blossoms like hydrangeas means you only need a few. Being there is very little "arranging" to these arrangements, they will be much less expensive.

Dress - This dress is from David's Bridal and is currently on sale for $850 yet has a very high-end, designer look. It looks straight off a top designer's runway without the designer price tag.

Invitations - These are through Paper Source where you can get all you paper, envelopes, stamps, etc. for a great price. You can take them into a copy store or some you can even print off your home computer. Need help creating a custom design for you invitations? Email Jeffrey O'Connell. He can create beautiful custom invitations, save-the-dates, favor tags, escort cards, etc. All at a great price!

Lavendar Bridal Bouquet - This one I just fell in love with it! It is so simple you can do it yourself, yet so elegant. And can you just imagine the smell!

Potted Plants Centerpieces - These are, again, such a simple DIY project. Clay pots can be found anywhere. You can buy them in such an array of colors or patterns to fit your decor. Or why not buy plain clay pots and paint them yourself? Then you can fill the pots with any type of flowers that are in bloom. What's best about these is they could double as favors if you include enopugh per table. Or whatever pots your guest don't take, you can have in your garden at home to remember your wedding everyday!

Wedding Cake Alternatives - Who says you have to have cake? There are so many options now. Shown here are cupcakes and tiered puddings or mousse. Arrange sweets on tiered platters. Serve puddings or mousse in champange flutes. When opting out on the cake, remember, it is all about the presentation.

Shoes - These shoes are from Payless and were just $25! If you want something other than white, you can get them custom dyed for about $45!

High Price Look for Less

Why should you have to go deep into debt in order to have the perfect wedding? Unfortunately, not everyone is an A-List movie star with millions of dollars to blow on their wedding day. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a wedding worthy of a magazine cover.
• The Dress – You do not need a top designer wedding gown to look beautiful. Big designer names set the wedding trends for the season. However, those designs are then copied and reproduced in mass at much lower prices. Watch for sample sales or end of season sales. Forgo the expensive silk fabric and look for a polyester blends. They are much less expensive, easier to clean, and don’t wrinkle as much.
• Dresses for the Girls – Save your female attendants money as well by shopping for their dresses in department stores. Check out the sales after prom or the holidays.
• Flower Power – Make sure your flower choices are in seasons for your wedding. Most florists can get nearly any flower any time of year but it will cost you. Your florist should be able to suggest alternatives to your out of season favorites that will be just as beautiful and be able to give you the same, or at least similar, look for a lot less. This also goes with less expensive alternatives to high end flowers. Add in fillers to your bouquets and centerpieces. Lots of greenery, baby’s breath, and large bushy blossoms are great ways to fill space without emptying your wallet.
• Décor – Shop around. Buying from specialty stores always costs more. For vases or candles, check out the dollar store. For unique touches, check out discount stores like Ross, Marshalls, or my favorite, T.J. Maxx/Home Goods. Wal-Mart, Kmart, and Target are also great discount stores to check out. Shop online. Sure you have to pay for shipping but the internet has some great deals and you can often find things you can buy in bulk and wholesale prices. Ebay is amazing!
• You’re Invited – Make your own invitations. Craft stores like Michaels and JoAnn have invitation kits that you can customize and print with nearly any printer.
• Where? – Look for ceremony and reception sites that need little decorations. Having your ceremony in a lush and beautiful garden are usually fairly inexpensive to start with. They also provide all the décor for you. Why add lots of other fuss when the natural beauty of the gardens already takes your breath away?
• Drinks – See if your caterer will allow you to provide your own alcohol and other drinks. Stocking up on drinks from places like Beverages & More or Costco can save you a ton of money.
• Gifts – Nowadays, it seems like more and more couples are living together before the big day. If you are one of these couples, it is likely that you already have more than enough towels, dishes, and small appliances. Ask your guests to contribute to your honeymoon fund. There are websites, such as Travelers Joy where you can register for your honeymoon. Your guests can buy you one night stay at that villa in Venice or a romantic dinner for two at the restaurant overlooking the Caribbean shore. Websites like this make gifts a bit more personal than handing you a check.
• Make Money Off Your Wedding – Ok, I know this sounds crazy but there are tons of brides out there just like you who are trying to save money on their wedding. You can sell you wedding items after your wedding that you don’t need/want. Really, when are you ever going to use 15 vases and 150 tea light holders ever again? Sell the extras you bought and never used. Sometimes it is even cheaper to buy your tablecloths or other linens and then sell them when you are done than to rent them. Check out sites like Weddingbee or Craigslist.
• Hire a Wedding Planner - I know this may sound silly as a wedding planner could be pricey. However, most wedding planners, such as myself, can work within your budget and help make sure you plan within your means. A wedding planner can also help negociate better prices with your other vendors. They know the ins and outs of what works best and can take care of it all, saving you money and even more importantly, time. Time is valuable and this is time you could spend working and making more money!

A couple years ago, I decided that I was going to go skydiving for my birthday. A couple friends of mine and I drove up to Lodi, CA along with my parents (who would just watch us take the plunge) to check off one more thing on my list of things to do before I die. Yesterday, I received an email from my mom with photos of our jump and was totally inspired.

I wanted to do an inspiration board this week inspired by flight with birds and bright blues like the sky. However, I thought that the Love Birds theme has been done. I wanted to take it to a whole new level. When searching around on Google, I came across this piece by Vincente-Lucy Knight

California Theatre

This gorgeous historical theatre in downtown San Jose is absolutely stunning. I went there this evening to see Lawrence of Arabia. Unfortunately, my fiance, Brook, was working so I had to go alone. Mainly it was to just to see the theatre but I had never seen Lawrence of Arabia so I figured, "what the heck!" That movie is really long!

The California is now mainly used for the San Jose Opera, Ballet, and Symphony though this was the last weekend for their summer movie series.

They do host weddings within the theatre and their multi-layered lobby is a gorgeous setting for your reception. It was built in 1927 and is beautifully restored as accurately as possible to its formor glory with a few modern changes. This is the start of a new weekly segment. Each week we will be featuring a new Inspiration Board with photos for a different wedding theme or color story. These may or may not be of actual weddings we are working on.

This weeks feature is a Spanish Flamenco theme. This is something that was mention during a brainstorm with a past client but this particular theme was not chosen. However, I was very excited about it and flew into ideas head first. I would love to actually be able to execute this idea someday so if you love it, please let me know!

Our First Wedding! A Success!

The Test Of Time Weddings had our first wedding this past Saturday. Marianne and Jeff are now Mr. & Mrs. DeLumpa! Everything went smoothly with a few minor snags (as is expected) but were handled quickly and smoothly! My assistant, Rebecca, and I were so exhausted by the end but excited and happy with the result. Our biggest lesson for the day was to wear comfy shoes. My feet are still hurting.

Everything was beautiful, especially the bride and groom! Marianne and Jeff were absolutely glowing the entire night!

Thriller!

So I thought that maybe we had an orginal idea when Brook and I came up with the plan to perform the Thriller dance at our wedding with our bridal party. Apparently, this is kind of a popular idea. Oh well, we are still going to do it. Our guest will be very surprised and will love it. I guess we may have to spurge for a videographer though. Also, Thriller will not be the only choreographed dance we have planned but you'll have to wait and see for the other.

This video was The Knot's Facebook page. I am so inspired. I would love to work with a couple who would want to do something like this. I even got a little misty-eyed watching it. It is so wonderful to see such a fun couple so happy and in love and just having a wonderful time!

That apple diet was the worst. I think I actually only made it about another hour or so after I wrote my last post. I felt just awful that day. Eating nothing but apples was such a bad idea. I was shaking, dizzy, and had a horrible headache. Please, never, ever try this diet!

An Apple a Day...

I started this new detox diet today. You eat nothing but apples for 3 days! My friend/assistant talked me into this. I am half a day in and feel awful. I have eaten 3 apples in about 4 hours and have had 2 cups of herbal tea. I am starving and tired. I can do this though! It is only 3 days. I need a nap!

I found this photo of this amazing creation on OnceWed. A display coordinator for Anthropology named Ruthi Auda created this out of tree branches and tissue paper. Absolutely breath-taking! If anyone has any idea on how to make this, please contact me! I'd love to have this at my own wedding!
